Intuitive Eating VS Counting Macros for Fitness Goals

If you pay attention to the Instagram Fitness world then I’m sure you’ve noticed that counting macros is out. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. The new trend seems to be intuitive eating, which in my opinion isn’t all that new, but that’s irrelevant.

What is intuitive eating?

Intuitive eating is when you consciously pay attention to your hunger and fullness. You only eat when you’re hunger and you eat till you are full. This means that nothing is off limits. So the slice of cake you’ve been craving…go for it!

But does it work?

Yes and no. Most of the world isn’t trying to be an instagram fitness star. 90% of people are just trying to be healthy, happy, and look good. So if you’re not trying to reach a very specific body composition then yes it will work.

Intuitive eating cuts out emotional, stress, and boredom eating.

If you’re someone trying to lose a few pounds it’s a really good alternative if you actually stick to it. You may not lose weight as quickly as you would on a diet plan but the weight loss would be more sustainable because you’re not depriving your body.

On the downside, the freedom of intuitive eating may be too much for some people. It can lead to eating a lot of junk food and not seeing any results or positive physical changes from lack of proper nutrients.

Clean eating along with intuitive eating is the best way to go about it.

It’s all about balance.

Feeding your body healthy foods 80% of the time while also eating intuitively is what’s going to allow you to see results without any sort of diet plan. It’s what I do personally even before it started trending because it makes the most sense for when I’m not intentionally trying to gain or lose weight.

Now anyone who is trying to compete for a bikini body competition or a powerlifting meet may not want to use intuitive eating. Prepping  for a specific goal such as losing as much body fat as possible while maintaining muscles or increasing max strength would require you to eat a specific amount of food daily.

If you don’t fall into either of those catagories intuitive eating can definitely be a winner because it’s a more natural way of eating.

But remember, practicing mindfulness is key. Our mood can affect our digestive systems and mimic the feeling of hunger and lead to comfort eating. Sometimes a good way to handle that is to just slow down and really pay attention, because you may realize that even though you can have that slice of cake you really don’t need it.
