They say the holidays are all about giving and I’m here for it. But what about giving to yourself?
You spend so much time shopping for friends and family, cooking decorating, and it’s amazing. The warm hearted laughs and hugs while drinking apple cider and watching Christmas movies. Or at least that’s what you hope for.
The reality looks a little bit different.
Your children are harassing you about Christmas presents. You’re trying to put on a happy face while figuring out how you’re going to pay for everything. Your family is struggling to work out their schedules to spend time together. The holidays can be overwhelming.
One thing I learned a long time ago is that the gift of giving is a blessing. But you can’t pour from an empty cup.
It’s important to maintain your own sanity and make sure that your self care and happiness meter is full so you can continue to give to others without stressing.
So on the 12 days of Christmas try out this 12 day holiday refresher to refill your cup during the holiday season.
If you didn’t know, the 12 days of Christmas starts on Christmas Day! So enjoy the day with the people you love. Give all of the love and smiles and gifts that you can because day two is when the real self care recovery begins. Merry Christmas!
Listen to some relaxing music, get comfortable and just vibe out. This is best done in an area where you can be alone and tune out everything else going on around you.
Take a nice hot bath. Or shower. But baths are so much more relaxing. Plus if you’re anything like me you can get a nice smelling bath bomb to throw in with some essential oils. As an added bonus you can turn up the atmosphere by lighting some candles and turn out the lights. Then just let the steam take you away.
Invest in an adult coloring book. These are so great for de-stressing. If you have children you can also get them a coloring book and you can do some self care while having some bonding time. Kill 2 birds with one stone, metaphorically speaking of course.
Read that book that you’ve been planing to read for a while. If you don’t have one, this would be the perfect time to discover a new read and figure out what you’re interested in. For me it would be Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. It’s a book of poems that I’ve been meaning to get my hands on to sit down and read. So pick your book, find a comfortable spot and start reading.
Take a day off social media. Sometimes we get so caught up in what everyone else is doing we can spending hours just scrolling through social media apps. Use this extra time to be more productive instead. Cook a healthy meal. Go for a walk. Meditate. Do something you wouldn’t normally have time to do.
Do some yoga. A daily yoga practice works wonders for the body. Even if you can’t dedicated yourself to a yoga practice every day, just this one day is good enough. There are so many benefits to stretching and you can check out my thoughts on it in a previous post.
Declutter and redecorate. If you haven’t done this already. This would be the perfect time to clear some space in your closest or room. Buy some fuzzy blankets and pillows. Put up some festive decorations and make your personal space feel a bit more cozy and comfortable.
Bake some deserts and indulge a little. Sometimes it’s good to let go and feed your body some treats you love but wouldn’t normally have. I love Christmas themed sugar cookies and just cookies in general. Especially with milk. So good!
Have a day out with your friends before things get hectic. Pamper yourself. Get a mani pedi or get your hair done. Go out to your favorite restaurant together and catch up on each other’s lives. Or spill some tea. Whatever works.
You’re almost there. Take a nap. You deserve it.
Take 30 minutes out of your day to write whatever is on your mind. If you’re not sure how to do this check out the post I wrote on Morning Pages. Before you finish writing be sure to write down the things that you’re grateful for this season and your goals for the new year. Don’t think of it as a New Year’s resolution but as a way to keep yourself accountable for the future.
