Inexpensive At Home Workout Equipment for Serious Gains

Inexpensive equipment I use to stay fit WITHOUT the gym

If you’re here, you want to know how to get fit or stay fit with simple workout equipment without breaking the bank, right?

Well you’ve come to the right place.

As soon as I made the decision to travel to Costa Rica I began to slowly adjust my training so that I used less gym machines. My goal was to use less stationary equipment and more functional movements. I wanted to be sure that I would be able to continue my work outs even if I didn’t have access to a gym. It’s now been over a month with me working out solely at my home away from home. And I can say that with the little bit of equipment that I have, I’m happy that I’ve been able to keep up with my work outs.

How do I do it?

Relatively easily. I think that weight lifting has become so popular that some people forget that you don’t ALWAYS have to lift weights to build muscle and stay fit. It also makes beginners confused when they see so many women posting pictures and videos on social media of them in the gym on machines. I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked if there are other ways to get in shape or lose weight without the gym. And the answer is YES!

You just need the right tools and plan.

Resistance Bands

I swear by resistance bands. I will always recommend them. They offer them in a plastic/rubber option as well as a cloth/fabric option. My favorite are the fabric bands because they are sturdier and most of them are made specifically for your hips and glutes.

The rubber resistance bands are good too but in a different way. They definitely don’t have as much tension as the fabric ones so I don’t usually recommend them for glute and hip exercises if you’re looking for serious resistance. But they are great for leg exercises that require large movements such as lunges.

There are also rubber bands with handles that are great for upper body workouts. I use mine for working on my back, shoulders, biceps and triceps.

No matter if you choose one type of band or different styles, I do know that its always good to have bands with different levels of resistance. That way you can switch them depending on what you need that day.

Sliders

I’ve been using sliders for a month now with my workouts and it’s made such a difference. I’ve been using them for full body workouts. Arms, legs, abs, everything. The thing I love about simple workout equipment is that it may be advertised for one thing (my core sliders were advertised for abs) but you can get creative and find other uses for them.

I bought them specifically because I was travelling but these are so light and easy to use that I’m surprised I hadn’t bought them before.

Dumbbells and Kettlebells

Dumbbells are a staple when it comes to at home workouts. I don’t have to explain much about them because I’m sure you know how useful they are. Especially since you can get them in different weights. Unfortunately I only have a set of 5 pound dumbbells but I’ve been making good use of them. Especially for my shoulders.

If you know that you’re going to need different amounts of weight you can invest in adjustable dumbbells. My neighbor has them at his home gym and I can say they’re worth the money. They aren’t exactly inexpensive upfront but it’s a good investment for anyone trying to save space or money in the long run.

And you can’t forget about kettlebells. Did you know that kettlebells are just as useful as dumbbells? Sometimes I find them to be even better because they allow more movement. You just can’t swing a dumbbell the way that you would a kettlebell. You can do pretty much everything you can do with a dumbbell with a kettlebell, and a little more.

Yoga Mats

This isn’t the first thing people think of when it comes to work out equipment, unless they’re a yoga lover like me. But even if you rarely ever do a downward dog, a yoga mat is great for exercises that require you to be on your back or on your knees. Sometimes when I kneel down for an exercise, regardless of if the floor is carpeted or not, I have to use my mat. It helps reduce the impact on my knees, my back, and tailbone.

If you’re just getting started on your fitness journey and you’re only looking for a couple of pieces of equipment then I would go for the fabric resistance band and dumbbells. The fabric resistance band was my first purchase when I started working out a few years ago and I still stand by them to this day.
