May 6, 2019

stress relief activities

Self care and stress relief isn’t limited to having and entire me day, spa session, bubble baths, wine, and soft music. And as much as I’m sure we all would love that, it’s not always possible.

I love talking about ways to help busy women because for most of us, that’s just the what we are. Some of us have full time jobs, are single parents, are in school, or simply have a thousand obligations to tend to. OR ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Shout out to all of you strong women out there who need a break and feel like you just can’t find the time.

I’ll be honest, I don’t have all of the above going on in  my life and I still have a hard time fitting the things that I do into my schedule. And as much of a self care advocate that I am, that’s a no go for me.

You owe it to yourself to have at least 20 minutes to yourself to unwind and have some stress relief. These fast stress relief methods will give you the zen that you need to make it through the day without feeling like you’re a pot about to boil over. So check them out, give them a try, and let me know what you think!

At Home Yoga Sessions

Now I know yoga may look difficult and like a lot of work but I’m telling you it’s AMAZING for fast stress relief and losing tension. I’ve been doing yoga for 3 years now and I’ve only just starting taking actual classes.

With at home yoga sessions you can move freely, as slow or quickly as you want. You can spend a deliberate amount of time in each pose and really listen to your body to feel what it needs rather than going through the motions and simply follow what the instructors tell you.

Don’t get me wrong, instructors are great when you have no clue what you’re doing.

But once you get the hang of it, it’s nice to be in charge of how you move. If you need a new yoga mat to get you started try Sivan Extra Health and Fitness 1/2-InchExtra Thick 71-Inch Long NBR Comfort Foam Yoga Mat for Exercise, Yoga, and Pilates. It’s highly rated on Amazon with over 4,000 positive reviews.

All you need is about 10 minutes to loosen up your body and feel refreshed. My favorite way to both warm up and wind down are with a Sun Salutation.

A sun salutation is a sequence of yoga poses that warms up, strengthens, and aligns the entire body. I have a whole video that you can follow along with that shows you how to do Sun Salutation A here.

Essential Oil Diffusers

There is nothing like essential oils. I’ve watched them become super popular in the holistic community and for good reason. They have so many healing benefits. Sure, they are amazing for stress relief, but depending on the blend of oils you can use them to feel more energized, to feel more romantic, to help you sleep, to feel focused.

There really is no limit to the blends of essential oils that you can put together. With the diffusers, all you have to do is add water and a few drops of the essential oils of your choosing and the aroma fill the space. An at home aroma therapy treatment that will help you relax within a few minutes.

MONQ

And if for some reason you aren’t able to use a full sized essential oil diffuser, they also make portable diffusers as well.

My favorite portable essential oil diffusers are by MONQ. With their diffuser pens there’s no work involve and the oils are already blended for you to fit your needs. You just breathe in through your mouth and exhale through your nose a couple of times and you’re good to go.

I really loved MONQ’s ‘zen’ blend with frankincense, sweet orange, and ylang ylang, especially because I could use it at my office job when I was feeling stressed out about the overload of paperwork on my desk and it made my cubicle smell pretty. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in you can use my link here and receive a 10% discount on a MONQ pen.

Journaling Your Thoughts

For all of you bullet journal lovers out there, that isn’t the type of journaling that I’m talking about. The journaling that I’m talking about is more of a reflection or gratitude journal.

I’ve kept journals off and on since I was 12 and what I’ve learned since then is that journaling is not only for talking about what went on during the day and external factors. It is for getting your thoughts out on paper so that they’re no longer taking space in your mind.

Journaling for stress relief (or anxiety) is great when you feel like you don’t want to tell someone everything that’s going on in your mind. Or maybe you just don’t want to bother them with your random thoughts.

Taking about 30 minutes a day to be alone and focus on getting your thoughts on paper can be the most therapeutic thing you’ve done in a long time.

And once you hop on the journaling train it’s hard to stop. For me it’s always been therapeutic. But when I changed my journaling style last year the results were life changing.

After hearing about ‘morning pages” through a book called The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity And I know this book seems like it’s made just for artists but it has changed the lives of people that feel like they don’t have a creative bone in their body.

Because of this book, every morning I started writing 3 pages full of my thoughts and it actually led me to making some really big career and life decisions that I don’t think would have happened otherwise. I highly recommend it and even better, it’s free when you sign up for a 30-day audible trial.

Meditation Breaks

To continue on with the subject of clearing your mind and relaxation, you can spend 10 minutes out of your day to do some simple meditation and breathing techniques.

I’ve heard from friends that they find it difficult to meditate because they have trouble clearing their minds. They have too many thoughts and they can’t seem to stop thinking about things that are going on in their lives. Sometimes I have that issue to. If you’re like my friends, don’t get discouraged. You can meditate too!

For beginners who have trouble calming their mind, the first thing you should know is that its okay to have a random thought pass through. What you should do is focus on your breathing. If you do have random thoughts, let it pass just as it came and refocus your attention to your breathing.

If you still find it difficult to relax and clear your mind, you can try a guided meditation. A guided meditation is when you have someone leading your meditation practice and giving you ideas to focus on.

Whenever I’m trying to meditate I love using meditation apps. A really popular guided meditation app I used to use is called Calm. I loved using it because it had multiple options of background music and affirmations of your choice to focus on. But I will say it’s a paid app that requires a subscription.

A really great free meditation app that I absolutely love is called Oak. It has both guided and unguided meditation options, breathing exercises, and nature sounds to help you sleep.

It also let you track your progress to see how many times you’ve meditated and it can send you reminder if you like. I personally have a daily reminder set on my phone because I can be forgetful.

And I get it. Life can be stressful. By taking just a few minutes out of your day with these remedies you can find clarity and relieve yourself from unnecessary stress and tension in your mind, body, and soul.
