I’m addicted to my phone.
And it feels good to admit it. As much as I love to disconnect and get my fill of self care away from technology, sometimes I just can’t seem to put the thing down. And I know I can’t be the only one. Almost everything I need is in the palm of my hand.
I love to go for walks around the lake near my apartment, write in my journal, do yoga and meditate. But those things I can’t exactly do on my phone. And with the way my schedule is set up, sometimes it’s hard for me to fit it in my day. But I try to make time for myself to recharge whenever I can because life can be stressful.
Now that doesn’t mean that I just sit around watching Netflix, not going to the gym, and stuffing my face. That’s self indulgence masquerading as self care. oI’m talking about real self care that improves my physical and mental health.
So lately I’ve been testing apps on my phone for more convenient ways to cater to my self care and wellness needs. And while searching through the app store for good apps is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, there are a few gems that I found in the app store for self care and wellness that I’m going to hold onto.
These apps are definitely ones that I recommend you download on your phone today and try for yourself.
Self Care Apps You Should Have on Your Phone

I typically follow a stream of conscious style of writing when I’m writing in my journal. It helps me get out whatever I have on my mind at that moment and leads me to dig deep into my thoughts and desires. But something like that can take up 30 minutes or more of my time. Prompted journal is nice because it still allows me to dig deep but with intention and purpose. Since I’m writing based off a prompt, it keeps my thoughts focused and gives me some mental clarity.
All I have to do is take 5 – 10 minutes out of my day to answer a journal prompt. You can also set daily reminders if you have a hard time remembering to write. It uses prompts such as “Dear future me…”, “I feel confident when…”, “I wish others knew…”, and many more. You can even add your own prompts if you’d like.
Another journal app that I really like is Jour. I’m not going to lie, it took a few tries for this app to grow on me because I’m not used to being asked questions and having prompts when it comes to journaling. With that being said, this app is great because it gets me to not only think about how I feel and what I want, but why I want it. It has different “journeys” you can take such as Love Yourself, , Design Your Life, and Heal and Grow to guide you through that process.
If you’re someone who like a little guidance when you write you’ll really like this one. And even if you don’t, it gives you the option to just write a normal journal entry. Two thumbs up for Jour.

Although Mantra doesn’t have bells and whistles, what it does have is tons of daily affirmations. If you’re someone who likes to meditate or start your day off with some quiet time this app is great. It provides soft calming music in the background while you view your affirmation for the day.
If you get the premium version of the app you can choose different categories of affirmations that you’d like to have. And if you don’t want to shell out the money for the premium version of the app, no worries! In the free version they give you all kinds of affirmations as well so you aren’t missing much. You can also do a 7 day free trial if you want access to the full library of affirmations.

A guided meditation app that I actually like. I’m really picky when it comes to guided meditation apps because they tend to be cluttered and overdone. When I want to meditate I want something simple and pleasing to the eye. Something that will relax me before I even start. Well this app does just that and then some.
Balance personalizes your meditation practice by asking you questions about your experiences and your goals. Then it puts together a 10 day plan to help you reach your goal. This is nice because even though I have some experience meditating, I don’t do it consistently. So this app helps me keep a routine. But even if you have no clue how to meditate the guide will help you start and deepen your meditation practice. I really like that it helps you improve skills such as focused breathing, awareness, visualization, etc.
As a free user you get access to their Foundations plan which is the one I tried, or to their free Advanced Plan. It also lets you get access to a few of their most popular single meditations that you can use any moment. Honestly, the fact that Balance’s meditations are customized to your needs is what really made me like this app.
